Daisy’s Diary: A Pawsome Adventure at Flynn Vets

It’s your favourite Cockapoo pup, Daisy, here to bark about my recent escapade at Flynn Vets in Ballynahinch, County Down. Buckle up, because this tail-wagging tale is about to begin!

As June and I drove up to Flynn Vets, my heart raced with excitement and a dash of nerves. Visiting the Vet can be a tad intimidating, you know? But once we stepped inside, as usual, any worries vanished into thin air. We were welcomed by the friendliest faces, each one radiating warmth and kindness.

After a few moments, someone called out “Daisy Alexander!”, and June led me into a different room where Clare Uludag, my lovely vet extraordinaire, was waiting for me. Let me tell you, folks, Clare works wonders. With her soothing voice and gentle touch, she whisked away my nerves faster than you can say “fetch!” Plus, she’s got a secret stash of puppy treats in her pocket – talk about a dream come true!

But the love didn’t stop with Clare. Flynn Vets boasts a squad of superhero veterinary nurses who showered me with cuddles and scratches. From ear rubs to belly tickles, they made me feel like royalty. I couldn’t stop wiggling with joy!

So, it turns out that vet visits aren’t so scary when you’re surrounded by a team of caring humans who’ve got your back.

With my check-up complete, I pranced out of Flynn Vets with a bounce in my step and a wag in my tail. Who wouldn’t be over the moon after all that love and attention? My day started with nerves but it ended with pure puppy bliss.

So there you have it, pals! My adventure at Flynn Vets was nothing short of paw-some, all thanks to the kindness, care, and cuddles from Clare and the team. Whether it’s a check-up or just a quick visit, this place is where magic happens, turning nervous pups like me into confident canines, one tail wag at a time.

Until next time, keep spreading the puppy love and wagging those tails!

Daisy xx

Creating a Sanctuary for Creativity

At Russell-Alexander Publishing, we have a dream; a dream of building a sanctuary, a creative haven where authors can flourish without distraction. Picture this: a space where new and seasoned authors are nurtured and guided, not only as writers but as creators, fully empowered to let their ideas take flight. A place where the endless worries of book production melt away, leaving only the joy of writing, creating, storytelling.

A Dream Realised: A Nurturing Environment for Writers

For many authors, particularly those taking their first steps into the literary world, the journey from the first draft to publication is daunting. It can feel like you’re traversing a winding path alone, weighed down by questions of design, marketing, and promotion. What if, instead, you could focus solely on your craft, knowing you’re supported at every turn? That is the heart of our dream: to create a perfect, natural home for authors where they are nurtured, encouraged, and uplifted.

Imagine being able to pour your heart into your book, knowing that everything else – your cover design, illustrations, marketing strategy, even where your book will find honest, transparent reviews – is already taken care of. This is what we are creating for authors.

The Elimination of Distractions: Your Focus is the Story

For authors, distractions can be abundant. Who will design your book cover to reflect the soul of your story? How will you find the right illustrator to bring your characters to life on the page? Who will ensure your book is seen by the right audience, or that it receives thoughtful, genuine reviews from people who truly understand it?

We take these distractions away. We believe authors deserve a space where they can write freely, without worrying about the practicalities of book production. It’s our mission to provide that, by connecting you with a network of independent professionals who specialise in key areas of the publishing process.

An Ecosystem of Excellence: Your Book in Expert Hands

By the time we bid farewell to 2024, we will have formed a cohesive network of skilled professionals in marketing, cover design, illustration, book reviews, and podcasts. These professionals are independent consultants, each with a passion for their craft. We’ve handpicked them based on their amazing talent and their ability to deliver exceptional service, and we wholeheartedly recommend them to our authors.

You, as the author, will select which professionals you want to work with; you will work directly with them and compensate them for their services. This will ensure transparency and give you full control over the creative process. Rest assured, you will be connected to professionals who care as deeply about your book as you do.

A Nirvana for Authors: Freedom to Create, Freedom to Shine

What we are creating is more than just a publishing service. It’s a home, a Nirvana for authors where every aspect of your book’s journey is lovingly handled, while you remain in control of the professional relationships. Whether it’s finding the right voice to represent your book on a podcast or connecting you with thoughtful reviewers who can provide insightful feedback, our goal is to ensure you feel supported at every stage of the process.

When you become part of the Russell-Alexander Publishing family, you’re not just another author – we walk this path with you, offering encouragement, wisdom, and the professional connections that allow you to shine.

So, take a deep breath. Imagine your story flourishing in a space where you are free to create, while everything else falls into place naturally. That’s what we’re building for you. Welcome to the future of author care. Welcome to your creative sanctuary.

Daisy’s 1st Birthday Post

I Had My First Birthday – check out my beautiful portrait!!

Hi everyone, Daisy here!  I celebrated my very first birthday (yay me!) – on 31st August 2024, and I can’t believe I’ve already been around for a whole year! Time flies when you’re having fun, and believe me, I’ve had LOTS of it!

This past year has been pawsome! I’ve had so many amazing adventures with June and, of course, my best doggie friend, Dougal! Dougal and I have spent hours running around in the garden and the courtyard, chasing each other’s tails, and having the best zoomies ever. He always tries to out-zoom me, but I’m way faster (don’t tell him I said that!).

And then there are my favourite little humans—June’s grandkids. Oh, how I love them! They always make me laugh, whether we’re playing fetch, rolling in the grass, or just cuddling up on the couch. They give me all the belly rubs and sneak me extra treats (shh, don’t tell June!). I make sure to give them my sweetest puppy eyes in return. They’re my partners in crime and my snuggle buddies all rolled into one.

I’ve also learned a lot this year – like how to sit and stay (even if I’d rather not sometimes!), how to chase birds (but never catch them, they’re too fast!), and most importantly, how to make everyone I meet smile.

I just want to say a big, fluffy thank you to everyone who’s made this year the best ever! You’ve given me so many cuddles, toys, and yummy treats, and I couldn’t have asked for a better family. I’m looking forward to many more years of wagging my tail, chasing after Dougal, and getting endless love from my humans.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I still have a big birthday bone to chew on, and Dougal’s waiting for me to play and then I’m off to see my favourite vet for my 1-year checkup!!

My Homegrown Therapy: Bread-making

Everyone has their own way of unwinding, reflecting, removing the hectic from their minds, and creating space in their lives to just be. Often, moments of calm and tranquility can feel like a rare luxury. Fortunately, I have found a simple yet profound activity that can soothe my soul and nourish my body and mind: bread-making.

For me, bread-making isn’t just about creating delicious loaves. It’s a therapeutic practice that offers me a multitude of benefits for my mental health and well-being.

Making bread requires my full attention. After all, I’m not Paul Hollywood, who can make bread in his sleep. So, from measuring ingredients to kneading dough and shaping the loaves or rolls, every step requires me to focus and be fully present in the moment. I find that it helps quiet the chatter in my mind and brings a sense of calm and clarity.

I love kneading and knocking back the dough; the rhythmic motion of kneading dough can be incredibly soothing and meditative. As I work the dough with my hands, I release any tension and stress, allowing me to relax and unwind.

I’m a pacifist, an optimist, and hopefully a kind and caring person. I look for the good in everyone but, sometimes, people make it very difficult!! This is where knocking back the dough comes in. After the dough has proved, it has to be knocked back – punched to let out the accumulated air that has helped it rise at this point. It’s so good. I focus all my frustration on knocking out the dough (sometimes imagining the person who has been rude or unkind to me), and within a few seconds, I’m back to the rhythmic kneading and serenity.

There’s something deeply satisfying about creating anything with your hands, and bread-making offers me a sense of personal accomplishment. Watching the dough rise and then transform in the oven into a golden-brown loaf fills me with pride and satisfaction, and, on days when I need it, it gives my self-esteem and confidence a much-needed boost.

Baking, in general, is very creative. Now, I can’t sketch or paint. I’m hopeless. However, I have found that, when I dare to emulate Mr Hollywood, I can create my own bread masterpieces. No, they are not of Great British Bake Off standard, but they look artisan (I love that word) and taste good. So, I use my bread-making time to create and experiment. Basically, I’m a bread-making artist in my own kitchen, and the only people I have to please are Daisy and me. She’s the Cockapoo connoisseur of crusty bread!

Baking bread is also nostalgic for me. It reminds me of my mother and maternal grandmother. I use my mother’s baking bowl and, sometimes, my grandmother’s loaf tins, which she was given as a wedding present in the early 1920s. There’s a feeling of tradition, continuity, and honouring the strong women who shaped my life.

Last but not least, the aroma of freshly baked bread fills the kitchen – it’s enough to lift anyone’s spirits. The sensory experience of bread making—from the feel of the dough between your fingers to the sight of a perfectly risen loaf and the taste of warm, crusty bread straight from the oven—awakens the senses and brings joy to the soul.

So, give bread-making a try. It’s more than just a culinary endeavour – it’s a powerful tool for nurturing mental health and well-being, allowing you to find moments of peace, joy, and connection amid life’s chaos. So, the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, consider turning to the therapeutic art of bread making to nourish your body, mind, and soul.

Daisy’s Diary: Introducing me – the Cockapoo Princess!!

Hey there, pals! Welcome to Daisy’s Diary and to my world, where I, Daisy the Cockapoo extraordinaire, reign supreme! Don’t I look cute in this photo – I was only 10 weeks old with no wrinkles and a smaller waistline!

Let me take you back to October 2023, the day my life got flipped upside down (in the best way possible, of course!) with the arrival of yours truly into the Russell-Alexander household. Three humans came to see me, my brother, and my mummy. I liked these humans and, happy days, they liked me. Before I knew it, I was cuddled up in a soft blanket, sitting on a new human lap in a big red Jeep, heading for my new life in the countryside.

June is my new human and I have burst into her life like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day, with my elegant golden coat (and yes, it’s silky and shiny, not curly like a poodle’s, thank you very much!) and my tail wagging a mile a minute. Did you know that it’s difficult to walk in a straight line when you wag your tail so much? I’m expecting to be breathalysed any day now! Within just two days, I went from being a shy little pup to a confident, cheeky whirlwind, ready to take on the world and the County Down countryside!

What makes me stand out in the crowd isn’t just my adorable good looks (although, let’s be real, I’m pretty darn cute), it’s my larger-than-life personality! I wake up every morning at 5 am with boundless energy, ready to go for walks, explore every nook and cranny, sniff every bush, and chase every bird in sight. When June and I are out walking (I look so good in my yellow coat – yellow is my signature colour), she carries a thing that she calls a Blackthorn walking stick (mystery – she doesn’t need one) and I find a big stick to carry – or trip over depending on its size!

Out here in the countryside, there are animals in the fields. There are lots of white fluffy animals, some big and some tiny. When they walk past my garden, I run over to introduce myself, but they walk away. They are not very friendly! And then, there are some gigantic animals. June says the word “cows” but I think she’s lost the plot as it’s clear to me that they’re big, black-and-white dogs! I bark “Hi there!” to them but they don’t bark back! What’s that all about? I, personally, think they recognise that I’m a princess and they don’t want to overstep the mark. That explanation works for me!

Back at home, I’m a great help with all the chores. When the big warm machine has finished drying the clothes in the utility room, I selflessly help everyone with the laundry by lifting out socks and pants and hankies. My humans don’t get it – I’m helping – why are they chasing me round the garden?  Then, when June is doing her housework, a round thing appears and cleans the floors all by itself. It’s very noisy and disturbs my beauty sleep. I’ve tried sitting on it, lying in front of it and barking at it but it just won’t stop.

Despite the chaos I stir up, I bring heaps of love and laughter into my human’s life. I’m June’s constant companion (she’s a busy editor, you know), whether we’re out adventuring, snuggling up for movie nights, or simply enjoying each other’s company. And, just like my late buddy Digby, the Border Collie, I love her and she’s my favourite human.

I’m learning to join in on her business meetings, just like Digby did (apparently lots of people knew him) and, when she’s working hard, I doze on my big golden blanket. It’s a hard job but someone’s got to do it!!

So, this is me – princess of all I survey and, as I embark on my new life in the countryside, I’m going to share my escapades and adventures with you lovely humans, one paw print at a time! Let the sparkle and stardom begin!

Love Daisy xx

Staying Inspired: Drawing Inspiration from Everyday Life for Your Writing

In the bustling rhythm of our daily lives, it’s easy to overlook the extraordinary moments hidden within the ordinary. As writers, our greatest asset is our ability to draw inspiration from the world around us. In this blog post, we delve into the art of staying inspired by finding beauty, depth and meaning in the seemingly mundane aspects of everyday life.

Embracing the Ordinary
Life unfolds in a series of moments, each containing a story waiting to be told. From the mundane routines of our morning rituals to the unexpected encounters on our daily commute to work, there’s poetry in the ordinary. Take a moment to live in the moment; observe the world around you with fresh eyes. Notice the way sunlight filters through the trees, the laughter shared between friends and strangers, or the quiet resilience of a solitary flower pushing through the cold concrete of the city streets. These are the moments that spark inspiration and breathe life into our writing.

Seeking Beauty in Diversity
Our world is a tapestry woven with threads of diverse experiences, cultures and perspectives. As writers, we are privileged and responsible for amplifying voices that may otherwise go unheard. Take the time to explore different communities, engage with unfamiliar cultures and traditions, and listen to stories that challenge your worldview. Embracing diversity not only enriches our writing but also fosters empathy and understanding in us and, in turn, our readers.

Finding Meaning in the Mundane
It’s often said that truth is stranger than fiction, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the intricacies of everyday life. Whether it’s the quirks of human behaviour, the complexities of relationships, or the existential questions that linger in quiet moments of reflection, there’s a wealth of material waiting to be mined from our daily experiences. Pay attention to the details, the nuances, and the emotions that colour the world around you. It’s within these subtleties that we find the raw material for our stories.

Cultivating a Sense of Wonder
As we navigate the complexities of adulthood, it’s all too easy to lose sight of the wonder and curiosity that fuelled our childhood imaginations. Yet, it’s precisely this sense of wonder that fuels our creativity as writers. Take the time to indulge your curiosity, to ask questions, and to marvel at the mysteries of the universe. Whether it’s exploring the wonders of nature, pondering the mysteries of the cosmos, or simply marvelling at the intricacies of the human experience, embracing a childlike sense of wonder can reignite the spark of inspiration within us.
